Why Visit Finca El Pilar?

Just 15 minutes from Antigua, Finca El Pilar is a paradise of lush forests, waterfalls, and natural pools. If you’re craving a refreshing escape into nature, this is the place.

Finca El Pilar is a privately owned nature reserve that remains largely undiscovered by mainstream tourists, making it one of Antigua’s best-kept secrets.

At Finca El Pilar, you’ll find well-maintained hiking trails, stunning waterfalls, and a butterfly sanctuary. It’s also a bird-watching hotspot, home to hummingbirds, toucans, and over 200 species of birds.

The highlight? The hidden waterfalls and cascading pools tucked deep into the forest offer a serene and refreshing escape for those willing to take the short but rewarding hike.

Travel Tips

  • No restaurants nearby, so pack snacks and plenty of water.

4. Lake Amatitlán — Volcano Views & Thermal Spas

Why Visit Lake Amatitlán?

If you love a hidden gem, Lake Amatitlán is the perfect alternative to the more tourist-heavy Lake Atitlán. It’s closer to Antigua, making it an easy day trip, and it’s renowned for its soothing thermal waters heated by underground volcanic activity.

The lake is surrounded by rolling hills and offers breathtaking views of Volcán Pacaya, which looms dramatically in the distance.

This peaceful retreat is ideal for women looking to unwind, reconnect, and indulge in some well-deserved self-care. Whether you spend the day floating in mineral-rich waters, enjoying a lakeside meal, or taking a scenic boat ride, Lake Amatitlán is a haven for relaxation.

What to Expect & Your Perfect Itinerary

If you’re planning a group getaway, follow this itinerary to make the most of your time:

8:00 AM: Arrange a private shuttle or take an Uber from Antigua. The drive takes about an hour, so grab a coffee and enjoy the scenic ride through the lush Guatemalan countryside.

9:00 AM: Kick off your adventure with a boat ride on Lake Amatitlán.

10:30 AM: Head to Santa Teresita Spa, a top-tier thermal bath and wellness retreat. Their thermal circuit features pools of varying temperatures, a volcanic sauna, and rejuvenating hydrotherapy treatments.

12:30 PM: Time for lunch! Enjoy fresh grilled tilapia, a local specialty, at a lakeside restaurant. Pair it with a cold limonada con soda (sparkling lemonade) and enjoy the view.

2:00 PM: Take a stroll along the waterfront, browse local artisan stalls, and chat with friendly locals.

3:30 PM: Head back to Antigua just in time for a sunset cocktail on a rooftop bar.

Travel Tips

5. Volcán Pacaya — A Hike with Lava & Marshmallow Roasting

Why Visit Pacaya?

If you've ever dreamed of standing near an active volcano, hiking Volcán Pacaya is your chance. One of Guatemala’s most accessible volcanoes, Pacaya offers a thrilling yet manageable hike for all fitness levels.

Unlike tougher volcano treks like Acatenango, this hike is moderate in difficulty and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the top.

But the real highlight? Lava fields where you can roast marshmallows over steaming volcanic vents. It’s a surreal experience you won’t forget!

What to Expect & Your Perfect Itinerary

For the best experience, opt for a guided sunrise or afternoon hike. Here’s a tried-and-true itinerary:

6:00 AM: Get picked up from your hotel in Antigua for the drive to Pacaya National Park. This takes about 1.5 hours.

8:00 AM: Start the hike! The trail is moderate, but if you need a little help, local guides offer horseback rides for an extra fee.

10:00 AM: Reach the summit area and explore the black lava fields. This is where the fun begins! Guides will hand out marshmallows so you can roast them over volcanic vents (yes, the ground is that hot!).

11:00 AM: Begin your descent and head back to Antigua.

1:00 PM: Reward yourself with a post-hike smoothie or tacos at one of Antigua’s many fantastic cafes.

Travel Tips

  • Perfect for Adventure lovers, first-time volcano hikers, and thrill-seekers.

  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes (the lava rock can be sharp) and bring a jacket (it gets chilly at higher altitudes).

  • Pack marshmallows and skewers, or buy them from the friendly guides at the top.

  • If you prefer a sunset hike, bring a headlamp for the way down.
