Over the past four years, I have navigated a series of profound challenges that truly tested my resilience: the heartbreaking loss of seven loved ones, an unexpected layoff, and stepping into the role of caregiver for my father after his cancer diagnosis.
These experiences, while incredibly difficult, became the cornerstone for rebuilding my life from the ground up.
I embarked on an eye-opening two-year journey around the world, relocated to the breathtaking city of San Diego, and launched Traveling Women Official—a business dedicated to empowering women to explore the world.
Additionally, I created a supportive Facebook group for empty nester moms, where moms can embrace the joy of travel and be inspired by others.
Through travel, I discovered a powerful lesson: life is too short to dwell in grief.
If I allowed myself to remain stagnant in sorrow, I wouldn't be able to look back six years later and recognize the incredible transformation travel has brought to my life.
Life is undeniably filled with transitions—whether they arise from divorce, career shifts, relocation, an empty nest, health challenges, or the loss of beloved family members and pets.
These pivotal moments can profoundly impact our identity. Though they may initially seem overwhelming, they present a unique opportunity to redefine who we are.
How You Can Deal With Life's Changes Through Travel
Acknowledge Your Feelings
The first step in navigating a big life transition is to acknowledge your feelings. It’s natural to experience a mix of emotions—confusion, sadness, excitement, or relief. Allow yourself to feel and process these emotions rather than suppress them.
Journaling or talking to a trusted friend can help you articulate what you’re experiencing, creating a foundation for your journey ahead.
Reflect on Your Values and Passions
Consider listing your passions and interests and think about how you can incorporate them into your life moving forward. If you have no idea what you are interested in, begin doing things you have never done before to learn more about who you are.
Take time to reflect on what truly matters to you.
What are your core values? What activities make you feel alive? This reflection can help you gain clarity on what you want to prioritize in this new chapter.
Embrace Travel as a Tool for Rediscovery& Transformation

Traveling can be a powerful way to rediscover your identity after a big life transition. Stepping outside of your comfort zone and immersing yourself in new cultures and experiences provides a fresh perspective on life.
Travel challenges you to adapt, embrace the unknown and connect with different ways of living, which can spark inspiration and creativity in your own life.
Set New Goals
With a clearer understanding of your values and passions, it’s time to set new goals that align with your vision for the future. These goals can be big or small—whether it’s pursuing a new career, embarking on a new hobby, or planning a transformative trip.
Setting goals gives you direction and motivation as you navigate this transition, and travel can be a significant part of that plan.
Embrace a Growth Mindset
Adopting a growth mindset is crucial during times of change. Instead of viewing challenges as setbacks, see them as opportunities for growth and learning.
Embrace the idea that you can adapt, evolve, and thrive in new circumstances.
Travel embodies this mindset, as each journey can teach you something new about yourself and the world around you.
Build New Connections

As you redefine your identity, consider building new connections and relationships through travel. Seek out communities or groups that align with your interests or goals, whether online or in person.
Engage with fellow travelers, locals, and other women who share similar experiences. These connections can provide support, encouragement, and inspiration as you navigate this transition.
Practice Self-Compassion
Be gentle with yourself during this process. Redefining your identity takes time and patience.
Celebrate small victories and acknowledge your progress, no matter how minor it may seem.
Practicing self-compassion will help you stay grounded and focused as you navigate this journey, both at home and abroad.
Stay Open to New Opportunities

Finally, remain open to new opportunities and experiences—especially those that travel offers. Life transitions often lead to unexpected paths that can enrich your life in ways you never imagined.
Whether it’s trying out a new hobby, exploring a new destination, or meeting fascinating people, embrace the unknown with curiosity and excitement.
Conclusion
Redefining your identity after a big life transition is a powerful journey of self-discovery and growth.
By acknowledging your feelings, reflecting on your values, setting new goals, and incorporating travel into your life, you can embrace this new chapter with confidence and purpose.
Remember, each transition is an opportunity to evolve and create a life that aligns with your true self.
Travel can be the catalyst that propels you forward, allowing you to rediscover the vibrant and adventurous spirit that resides within you. Embrace the journey, and let your new identity unfold!
